ACTA Rejected in European Parliament

Today the European Parliament voted with a 478 to 39 vote against ACTA the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement. Back in October of last year the United States applauded the deal and even went on to signing the agreement arguing that ACTA does not change US law but instead maintains the status quo.

“As with many of the challenges we face in today’s global economy, no government can single-handedly eliminate the problem of global counterfeiting and piracy. Signing this agreement is therefore an act of shared leadership and determination in the international fight against intellectual property theft,” said Mariam Sapiro, deputy United States trade representative.

This agreement which is more dangerous than SOPA had many supporters at one point around the world but a strong public movement against the agreement caught the attention of lawmakers and has been put to rest altogether.
